I Wish I Were Engulfed in Flames: My Insane Life Raising Two Boys with Autism
by Jeni Decker. eBook 2011; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(12% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

12%     Jaxson’s inability to communicate with others in a meaningful way makes forming relationships difficult. He’s unaffected by social mores or his lack of appropriate actions because they do not exist within the production in which he is starring. They don’t exist for him yet. At nine, he’s just beginning to speak in complete sentences and still wears a diaper.

Bellini, et al. (2009) describe Social Skills Training (SST) as ranking the 9th most effective strategy to be taught to people with ASD. One of the reasons not to provide SST is that it is seldom taught across multiple settings. They do approve of the encouraged ‘self-monitoring’, ‘relaxation techniques’, and ‘emotional regulation’. The length of the program can result in a ‘plateau’ effect, but they’ve seen no ‘dramatic failures’ of this intervention.

Knowing Autism by Lorca Damon, eBook 2012 Edition; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(1% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

1%       I couldn’t find any practical day-to-day information on raising my autistic daughter. Some books were nothing more than pie in-the-sky manifestos on how I should wear my daughter’s diagnosis and wear it like a badge of honor, as if I was one of the lucky ones who was chosen to have autism creep into my family and try to steal my daughter away.

2%          I wrote about all the little things we learned that made a difference in helping my daughter become a stronger and more confident person, in spite of what autism was trying to do to her.

3%          Overall, the theme of that book was about telling my daughter, “I love you fiercely, but you are going to have to learn to live in the same world as I do.”

A Friend Like Henry: The Remarkable True Story of an Autistic Boy & the Dog that Unlocked His World by Nuala Gardner, eBook 2008 Edition; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(8% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

8%       At the age of fourteen months, Dale suddenly found his feet.  There was no in between stage; one day he was crawling, the next he was literally up and running.

I informed the medical professionals that he had developed a strange, tiptoe gait when walking, but they remained unconcerned. Now that Dale was walking, however, new and more challenging problems surfaced. He seemed to have no comprehension whatsoever of even the simplest language.

< My Thoughts >    …he seemed to have no comprehension whatsoever of even the simplest language.

Dale had only some of the ‘markers of autism’ among the many he didn’t seem to have.  This would make it hard for family and physicians to show any real concern.

Autism: Turning on the Light: A Father Shares His Son’s Inspirational Life’s Journey through Autism by Keith Ambersley, eBook 2013; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(8% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

8%       Our family belief is that we have been blessed with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with a blank script. We believe that autism can be challenged to create positive outcomes.

Like so many parents, I am a father who has spent a vast amount of time researching volumes of information on the cause and symptoms of autism as well as asking questions about possible cures.

A cure may not be available to help our son. However, we hope and pray a cure will eventually be discovered to help other children in times to come.
te the basic fundamentals of communication and social behavior, which I have taken for granted all my life.

How Can I Talk If My Lips Don’t Move?: Inside My Autistic Mind
by Tito Rajarshi Mukhopadhyay, eBook 2011; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(12% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

12%     Mother knew nothing about my selective vision when I was three.  I could look at certain things but not at others.  Things that calmed my senses, were easier to see, while things that stressed my vision were not easy to look at.

96%     …I could actually envision myself as an angle, looking at the base and the hypotenuse.

My autism is the dynamic experience of my relationship to the world, with its many aspects of place, people, climate, and their own interactions.

97%     It was education that helped me enrich my imagination with all those probable and improbable reasonings based on science and philosophy, so that I could write my imaginings down as stories or as poetry.

I Am In Here by Elizabeth M. Bonker & Virginia G. Breen eBook 2011 Edition; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

I Am In Here: The Journey of a Child with Autism Who Cannot Speak but Finds Her Voice by Elizabeth M. Bonker & Virginia G. Breen, eBook 2011; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(5% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

5%       The stories in between are written by me, from the perspective of a mom, with lots of help from some dear friends.

Elizabeth’s older brother, Charles, also has autism. But in an ironic contrast to Elizabeth’s struggle to speak, Charles rarely stops talking. Both have made great progress over a full range of social, language, and behavioral issues. Both are in mainstream public school with the help of wonderful, dedicated aides.

7%       I cannot explain why our children bear the burden of autism. I’m no philosopher or theologian, just one of thousands of guilt-ridden mothers scratching and clawing to get our kids back from the tar grip of autism.

Ido in Autismland: Climbing Out of Autism by Ido Kedar, eBook 2012; with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(8% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

8%       Until he was seven, Ido had no means to show anyone that he was intellectually intact. His teachers and myriad experts assumed, based on his difficulty following directions, lack of speech and odd behaviors, that his intellect and knowledge matched his actions.

14%     Every parent of an autistic child knows that once your child is diagnosed you have to become an expert very quickly.

27%     Many times Ido reacted emotionally to the topic. Sometimes he hopped up, flapped his hands, or paced the room, but he always came back to complete his essay.

It was emotionally difficult for him to revisit the pain and frustration of his early years when he felt so trapped and terrified that his true intelligence might never be discovered.

Miracles Are Made: A Real-Life Guide to Autism by Lynette Louise eBook 2011 Edition; with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

Miracles are Made: A Real-Life Guide to Autism by Lynette Louise, eBook 2011; with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(4% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

4%       Diagnosis without directions: this is what it is to be told your child has autism.  It is my intention to help you understand why that is and then to change that reality by teaching you what to do to improve the prognosis.

5%       I will introduce you to the boy who introduced me to autism… it was attempting to understand Dar that taught me to understand autism. I spent all my exhausted mommy hours wishing I could fix him (and eventually his brothers as well) with a pill or a diet or a magical potion.  Inevitably I was to discover that I was in good company – most of the amazing parents I’ve worked with did the same.

< My Thoughts >       “…wishing I could fix him.”

The word “fix” is offensive to many… but it is not an uncommon ‘first responder’ reaction. Especially for parents who are blessed with high ‘problem solving’ skills. Perhaps rather than hearing the words “fix” they would prefer to hear the words…“making a difference”.

The ABCs of Autism Acceptance by Sparrow Rose Jones, eBook 2016; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(2% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

2%       As an adult with autism, my goal was to write something every day in April (Autism Awareness Month), working my way through the alphabet as I talked about ways to understand and accept us better. I apologize to my siblings in other countries for being so focused on the details of my own country, but I can only write what I know.

4%       We need to be accepted for who we are. We need to hear that we’re OK, we need to hear that the things we have trouble with don’t make us broken or lazy or horrible people.

The Aspie Parent, the First Two Years A Collection of Posts from the Aspie Parent Blog
by Liz Cademy, eBook Edition 2013; an Extended Review with < My Thoughts > by Sara Luker

(7% indicates the eReader book location, instead of page reference numbers).

7%       I am a parent, and I have Asperger’s. One of my kids (who has the pseudonym Ocelot online) has been diagnosed with PDD-NOS, Asperger’s’ cousin.

16%     Labels, Part 1. I am not a fan of labels, for many reasons.
Holding too close to a precise label can hurt our kids. Too many school districts will only provide services for students with conditions listed in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
